Unplanned litters and hermaphrodite mousies
« on: December 29, 2009, 01:21:40 PM »

A moderator on Hiiriforumi said my line of transgenics might have hermaphrodites occurring in it. Maybe that's what happened; in any case I spotted a very, very fat mousie in a group of what were supposed to have been all girls. Turns out there was a buck (duh!) in the group. He was removed to his own tank, and the next time I was in the mousery I found a dozen little pink eekers. *sigh* I'm hoping the other two haven't been caught as well.

Sometimes mousies just happen.

I have had one mousie that had nipples as a youngling, but ended up being a buck as a weanling... luckily he was taken out before he could impregnate anyone, but I was told he may have been a hermaphrodite.

Clownfish change sex as they are needed. A school of clowns generally consists of strict hierarchical communities, each community is dominated by a top-ranking female breeder. Her male partner is next, followed by up to four progressively smaller, non-breeding fish. When the dominant female dies, her mate changes sex and becomes female. The top-ranking non-breeder becomes a sexually active male, and all the other fish shift up a rank. Clownfish also regulate their size in order to remain part of the group. Each fish keeps its body mass 20 percent smaller than the fish directly above it in social rank, probably to avoid conflict. Fish who disrespectfully outgrow their rank are rejected by the clan.

Fish fact for the day.

It just reminded me of it when you were talking about Mice changing sex. =P

Clownfish aren't the only ones that do it, either, lots of animals change sex as needed, or part-way through development.  :)  I wonder if there are degrees of hermaphrodite in mice?  I wonder how that works!  Maybe some just have secondary sex characteristics of the opposite sex, maybe some really are both genders.  That's kind of cool.

Hey, that reminds me (but I don't want to make a whole other topic for it), does anybody know what conditions affect sex ratios in litters?  Does it depend on the buck, and if so, what about the buck?  Can different diets, temperatures, or anything like that alter the litter's boy-girl ratio?  Just been wondering about that one for a long time, and haven't found any clues yet.  :p

Hmm... in the Sims 3, if you eat apples you get a male child and if you eat watermelons you get a girl... I wonder if that would work with mice...  :-*

We could make that an experiment, heh.  I'm thinking not so much, though   :D

You'd think after 11 years I could accurately sex meeces. If my tris are based on Cattanach's Translocation, in which genes from the c locus of an X chromosome are stuck into another X chromosome, it makes sense. Some of these meeces end up looking like XXY or are XXX and all sorts of little things happen as a result, including erratic phenoytpes affecting coat color, expression of external sexual features, 'shaky' or neurologically impaired individuals.

I guess I'm going to keep checking under the tail of these yellow meeces as they mature. I don't think I've had this happen in my beige to black tris, for which I'm grateful. The oopsie litter is off a marked satin cinnamon and marked satin red, so they should be pretty mousies. I'm just hoping they don't suffer from typical satin health problems from being inbred.

Moustress, you should really write us an article on that stuff:

Some of these meeces end up looking like XXY or are XXX and all sorts of little things happen as a result, including erratic phenoytpes affecting coat color, expression of external sexual features, 'shaky' or neurologically impaired individuals.

I would love to learn more about it!  :D

The pith of the subject is too thick for me. I manage to extract little bits of info from reading about this kind of stuff, but the articles on it are all very technical and full of jargon that, after looking up about ten things in twenty minutes, has moustress completely glassy eyed and confused. I'd need about four more years of formal education before I'd attempt to write on that level.

But I do a pretty good job sounding like I know what I'm talking about, I guess.

I have an unplanned litter coming  :(

I bred my dove to the himi and when she had the litter I took the himi male out with in a couple days. Well now she is a wide load and looks like she may burst. I can only figure is Left the himi in to long as the litter was born on 12/10. That Himi is a fast worker...... :(

Herm, many does go into heat before delivery, or during, or right after, and will get pregnant at that time. In my experience it happens about half the time. I sometimes leave the buck in on purpose, which I know many breeders frown on, but I feel I have good reason. (I think I already posted on the subject so I won't go into it now.)
