Popsicle sticks!
« on: February 16, 2010, 10:57:17 AM »

So I've heard about several different people building little houses and jungle gyms for their mice out of popsicle sticks, and I finally got around to building some of my own:

Does anyone else here do that?  It's really fun!   ;D

That looks like a lot of fun! Wonder how long it'll take for the meeces to chew it to bits. Probably not as long at is takes to chew apart the cardboard thingies I make for my mousies.

As long as they're chewing on the popsicle furniture and not the cage, I don't mind, lol.  What cardboard things do you make?  :D

I make shelves by putting cardboard over Rubbermaid shelf racks, bend down the end at an angle and cut footholds for climbing. I use small boxes with a hole or two started for houses. Egg cartons get used without modification. The meeces love all the holes and little egg pockets. The dividers from cases of bottles are lots of fun as well. I put a hole or two in the bottom end to start them; mousies just seem to never get tired of climbing in and out of anything with holes or spaces in it. I have fun playing peekaboo with meeces in my hands, giving them different combinations of fingers to stick their noses through.

That's a lot of good ideas!  *takes notes*

I've used the cardboard bottle containers before, but they always seem to get soggy and need thrown out after just a couple of days.  :\

One does not expect cardboard to last long with meeces. I had one tankful that got a cardboard bottle divider and it lasted until I changed the cage the next time, which really surprised me.

That is impressive   ;D  I've started making sure the bucks get really easy to rebuild ones pretty much for that purpose,  heh.  So far the mom resorts (the cages I have of resting does) have the most complex playthings, because I expect theirs to last slightly longer and need to serve more mice.  The boys get littler ones and I try to make the platforms different each time, but I know they're thinking "hurrah!  another thing to pee on!"

Do you use any solution to keep them together? I'm just going to try. My brother has about 10000 popsicle sticks so...

Hot glue works wonderfully for me.  Just make sure you pull the strings of glue off, and don't glue where they're going to chew - I'm sure it might cause intestinal problems if eaten in bulk.
